Student and Coach…
19 year old Tan Peng Rui lives his life playing many roles. A Temasek Polytechnic engineering student, a basketball player and also a basketball coach.
Peng Rui has been playing basketball since the age of 5, unlike many kids who will get bored of a sport easily, his passion and love for basketball has only been on the climb over the years. With Peng Rui’s experience in basketball it was an easy task for him to get to play for Bedok North secondary school’s school team adding on to his experience on this court based strategy game.
In year 2007, with his experience in playing the sport, Peng Rui moves on to the next stage of his basketball life, being a coach. Due to his passion for basketball and believe that chances should be given to all that love the sport, he formed a team generally made up of Saint Hilda’s and Damai Secondary School students as their schools do not have basketball as a CCA. Peng Rui named the team SOUL Basketball Club aka Soul BC in hope that members of his team shares his passion and love for basketball.

Peng Rui’s efforts paid off as his team participated in the Community Basketball League organized by United World College and under his coaching they nailed Community Basketball League Under 14 boys 2nd runner up & Under 16 boys 2nd runner up in year 2007 and 2008.
When asked what are his plans being a coach in future, Peng Rui replied in humble tone, saying “I am lacking in experience in coaching compared to other coaches and still have more to learn”.

From the interview, I could also tell the bond between him and his team “I work hand in hand with the boys, as their coach, elder brother, friend.” I provide the listening ear. As our age gap is minimal, it is an advantage in communication for me.”
And what’s his secret to balancing his school life and basketball? Setting a strict timetable and sticking to it “study hard on weekdays and sports on weekends”. All sportsmen should model themselves after his example; to be passionate but still be a well-rounded achiever; in both sports and studies alike.
